The Second Event for Pitch Project of Festival International du Film d’Animation d’Annecy 2017 En Chine will last for three months. Work solicitation started in January 2017. In the mid-March, jury members with responsibility for initial review selected nine finalists from more than 100 applicant projects. Since April 10, master class training was provided for creators of these nine finalists. Through high-intensity one-on-one exchange within a short period, work improvement and upgrading level of expression, a final-review roadshow was ultimately held on April 14.
Animation project of Finding Bresson, submitted by Ph.D. Yi LI from China Academy of Art, stands out from the finalists of the nine projects and wins grand prix. Yi Li also gets the opportunity for the project venture capital roadshow (provided by Organizing Committee of Festival International du Film d’Animation d’Annecy 2017) and one-month project incubation and exchange with French animation studio (provided by China Organizing Committee).
Finding Bresson is adapted from the cartoonist Jun NIE’s work Finding Bresson. This film tells a story that a blind girl and her dog Bresson which can become a monster jointly look for an eye tree in the distance. The theme of this story is “No Pains, No Gains”. Blind girl gets the eye at the cost of her beloved dog Bresson. According to Yi LI, he adapts the original work by means of using no dialogue, less involving into the subjective world, and strengthening the logical link between the plots. In terms of visual design, he selects an ordinary town in China’s inland region (prototype is Dexing City, Yi LI’s hometown in Jiangxi Province) as the background so that the film shows some of the local flavors. In terms of drawing style, “grainy style” is sought after. In terms of technique, CG is integrated with “ink + smoke” texture effect so as to achieve the atmosphere of elapsing time similar to old photos and ink paintings, thereby endowing the films with melancholy temperament.
In addition, Jiajia LI also from China Academy of Art also wins Jury Award with ICU at 3p.m., who is also officially invited by Organizing Committee of Festival International du Film d’Animation d’Annecy 2017.
