Chinese female director Yang Mingming’s feminine-themed realism film ROU QING SHI (GIRLS ALWAYS HAPPY) enters into the 2018 edition of Panorama program, which has become the only Mainland China film selected for this section. It is director Yang Mingming’s debut film, which is also nominated for the Best First Feature award, competing against other 17 films.
Yang Mingming, born in 1987, directed, photographed and acted in short film FEMALE DIRECTORS. From a subversive perspective and shot way, she seamlessly combines realistic acting with fiction, representing young directors’ coolest creativity. The film became one of the top ten independent films in China that year, and swept over domestic and international youth film festivals. In 2015, she edited director Yang Chao’s feature film Crosscurrent, which won outstanding artistic contribution at Berlin International Film Festival.
ROU QING SHI (GIRLS ALWAYS HAPPY) is written, directed and starred by Yang Mingming, which is her debut feature-length art film. CROSSCURRENT’s director Yang Chao is the production supervisor, Yang Jing is the producer. The film showcases the verbal duels of an odd mother-daughter duo searching for happiness in art or daydreams of getting rich quick.
In the film, the mother is starred by famous producer Nai An, who has won the award for best actress at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival. The daughter is starred by Yang Mingming herself. This unique cast combination will undoubtedly be much anticipated on the big screen.
